New York: It is well-known that the US has announced the suspension of US aid, which provides financial assistance for the development of countries worldwide. Now, this effect has also been felt in India. It is reported that three clinics set up for transgender people in India have been closed. As a result, nearly 5,000 people are no longer receiving medical services from these clinics. The first-ever clinic for transgender people, set up in Hyderabad, along with clinics in Kalyan and Pune in Maharashtra, have also reportedly been shut down.

US Aid Suspension Impact on India

In 2021, the Mitra Hospital was launched in Hyderabad, the first-ever clinic for transgender people. According to several reports, this clinic provided services such as awareness on hormone therapy, mental health counseling, and guidance on HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Additionally, it offered general medical care, legal aid, and several other services. It was reported that the cost of providing these services was about ₹30 lakh per person per year.

Following reports about the closure of three transgender clinics in India, global entrepreneur Elon Musk and Republican Party Senator John Kennedy responded. They posted on social media asking if Americans now understand which countries benefit from their taxes and where the funds are going. The Trump administration has taken steps to suspend all projects funded by taxes paid by American citizens. Furthermore, it is known that Trump recently ordered the suspension of foreign aid.
